New UGFM – Radio Murrindindi Studio for Yea

April 7, 2014

Upper Goulburn Community Radio is to establish a new studio in Yea to give much easier access to broadcasting on community radio for the people of the Yea district.

‘UGFM’ – Radio Murrindindi, broadcasts across the Murrindindi Shire with four transmitters servicing the area at Alexandra & Lake Eildon, Yea & Highlands, Marysville & Lake Mountain and Flowerdale.

For the past 20 years UGFM has broadcast from two studios located in Alexandra, and in 2009 established a third studio in Marysville. Programs from both towns are broadcast across the Murrindindi Shire as will the new studio in Yea.

‘UGFM President Peter Weeks’ said that the UGFM Committee of Management had been working closely with the Friends of Yea Railway Committee of Management, the Murrindindi Shire Council and Heritage Victoria to establish the new studio at the Yea Railway Station.

The cost of the project is $40,000 with $10,000 of the funds for the project coming from the Federal Government through a Community Broadcasting Foundation grant, we are currently hoping to raise the remaining funds through grants and local fund raising, said Mr. Weeks.

Cheviot Ward Councillor and council representative on the Friends of Yea Railway Reserve Committee of Management Cr John Kennedy welcomed the new studio.

“We are very pleased to be able to provide a new home for UGFM here in Yea. The communities of Murrindindi Shire benefit greatly from having such a hard working community radio station and to see the service broadening its capabilities is very positive.” said Cr Kennedy.

Local members of the community in the Yea district are encouraged to become involved with UGFM and train to become broadcasters with the station ready for the opening of the new studio once fundraising is complete and the studio becomes operational.

Anyone interested in becoming a broadcaster will be trained to a level that will enable them to produce and broadcast their own programs across the Murrindindi Shire from any of our studios, said Mr. Weeks.
